[RANT] The Speedsters [message #282373] Do, 22 Juni 2006 18:04

Hi, my name is Dex, and I'm a ranter. Not often, actually, but every
now and then something pushes me past my limit and I have to rant about
it; I'm sure you know the feeling!^^

Anyway, as this involves HP, I thought this would be the best place to
do so. I'm not a *complete* stranger here, as I've posted here before,
but that was a while ago, on another computer and besides, the
Headmasters' dead...On with the Rant!

What is the deal with the Speedsters!? I literally cannot have a single
conversation about the Harry Potter novels with two or more fans before
they start comparing how fast they burned thru the books. Why am I
supposed to care?! That doesn't somehow make you a better person,
reader or HP fan than me or anyone else, which is the only reason I can
figure people insist on bringing this up!

I prefer to drag a book out, myself. Reread the last few pages or even
an entire chapter, before finishing. Savor the book like a fine meal,
if you will; but you don't hear me bragging about it! If I did, I guess
the Speedsters would look at me like those turtles from the internet
connection commercials, who are implied to be insane for actually
wanting their connection to be *slower*...

Hell, I'm tempted to beat them at their own game: "It took you an
entire *one sitting* to finish the book the day it was released??
Darling, I finished the book while waiting *in line* to reach the cash
register! You may applaud me now."

Now, I fully realize that there are probably many Speedsters here. And
if stampeding towards the climax is how you enjoy these books, then by
all means, do so. But please reconsider the need to bleat on about it
to the rest of us poor mortals who prefer to drift along at an mere
earthly pace, ok?

Ok, Rant over. I now return me to my normal sunshiny self...^___^

LOL.. well I am a speedster, but only the first time I get the new one.
I read it fast because I want to see what the story is and then I
immediately re-read it, slowly and thoroughly, for the detail... and
always more than once because no matter how slowly I read it, I miss
things. Every single book I have read this way, and no matter how many
times I have read it, I will see something here someone sys and will
wonder what they are talking about, and have to go read, again.

Indeed. I tend to read through the books fast because I like closure (I've
also been known to tear through tv series on dvd very quickly--like, one
26-ep series [half-an-hour eps] in two days...), and I like to talk to
other people about the books, which I can't till I've finished it. But I
don't "brag" about it, because.. Like you say, who cares?

I can understand and appreciate savoring, but I just can't... ~_~

LOL! With some of the lines I've seen for the book, I could almost believe
it!

I read them fast because, well, I read fast. I also reread them. I've
never reread books. I've reread HP about 6 times. Well, CoS is not my
favorite, but the others I've reread and reread.

I do skim when I reread though.

Anyway, I can tell you for certain that Harry Potter is about Russia.

No kidding. The line at the store I worked at for the last one was even
longer than most of our Christmas lines! Although the line for the
release of Star Wars Ep. III was almost as long...

Not me, dude. It took me several days to finish Half Baked Book. I
read a couple of hundred pages, got a bad feeling about where things
were going. Went to the pool hall, had a few firewhiskeys and played
some nine-ball. Next day read a another 200 pages. Had a bad
feeling... went to pool hall, more firewhiskey, played easier 8-ball.
Next day, finished book. Went to pool hall, drank myself under the
table. Couldn't play pool.

At the best, most of the HP books are at this first adult level of
reading. Personally, I read a lot of more complex fantasy books, like
Donaldson or Tad Williams, and they have a similar page count yet take
me MUCH longer to read.

Then, when I get to books by Brooks, for example, I fly through them.
With the HP books, it is even more so. This says nothing, however, for
my level of comprehension and enjoyment of the text. I enjoy these
different levels of books the same, though on different levels.

I know I am a fast reader, but I do think it is banal to brag about it.

I'm very slow. It takes me two days to read a new HP book. Not because I
read slow, but because I have a very short attention span. Sometimes
I'll be reading along, but my mind is wandering on to other things. Then
at the end of the chapter I have no idea what I just read and have to go
back and read it again. I've just signed up for Myspace. I figure if I
have any chance at all at being molested, it would be there. But don't
expect to easily find me if anyone were so inclined, there are very few
HP references in my profile. I just haven't been as enthusiastic about
anything since I gave up tequila. Now, everything is so boring. BTW, has
anyone heard from Drusilla? I wonder how things are going in her country...

mmmm.. tequila sounds good today. Would go great with the ribs I have

Next year will be better for us HP fans.. we will have a new book AND a

I don't know why. It was an impulse. (Not to mention I was bored out of
my mind and willing to try anything!) It's also the first time I have
EVER posted my picture on the internet. Funny thing is, hardly no one
acknowledges me, yet all you read in the news about Myspace is how the
site is rampant with predators. I guess no one is interested in
molesting a 40-something. That really sucks.

I do this too. When I get the book, I read it straight through, and
then re-read it a bit slower. I don't rush as fast as some people. Just
my normal reading speed. I just don't take many breaks. And I confess,
with Harry Potter releases, I plan for easy finger food that I can eat
without looking at it, so that I can continue to read while eating.
And I request the day off from work so that I can have plenty of time
to read it.

Next time, I will request two days off. With book 6, I started reading
it again right away, and then I had to work. And I had promised to loan
it to a friend. Two of her teenage kids also read them, so they had to
share previous books. I let her borrow mine for a few days so that they
could share 2 books instead of one. I only got partway through the
second time before handing it over.

Also, with this one, my nephew will be buying the CDs on the day of
release. He and my mom don't like to read them and prefer the audio
version. So, this way, they'll be able discuss it sooner.

Have there been any updates in how the writing has come along? I have
been off and on with reading the newsgroup, so if there was anything, I
missed it. I know I am being optimistic for a release of summer 2007.
But I am hoping.

I can think of only two reasons why I bring it up.

One is when I am telling people how I got hooked on Harry Potter. It
isn't a brag and only deals with the first 4 books. I got started after
book 4 came out. So, my nephew loaned me books 1-3. I read the first
one after seeing the movie, so it went really fast. I read the second
book the next night, and the third book the third night. These were all
smaller books, so that isn't a big deal, and I honestly don't know or
care how many hours it was. It's only relevant, that I got into the
books so deeply that all I wanted to do was read the books. On the 4th
night, I went to the bookstore after work (nearly 11pm) and bought book
4. That one was larger and fortunately I had the next day off to read
it. The next day after that, I figured there must be a newsgroup and
joined.

The other reason is just to say I spent the day reading the book.
People laughed at me for requesting a day off from work, so I told it
was a big book, and I was going to spend all day reading it. The next
day, they asked how long, and I told them.

I do agre that it is stupid to brag about it. People have different
reading speeds and styles. Some people have a hard time sitting in one
position for awhile. A lot of people can't take the day off, so they
have more breaks when reading. I certainly wouldn't look down on
somebody for reading a book slower than I do.

Oh for crying out loud!!! Why is it always me making that old mistake?
Your owl should have tipped me off. That's usually a girl thing. Anyway,
young lady, there's a great "guy" in you and I'd love to molest you
myself, if I weren't already up to my neck with someone, errr, riper. (I
had to promise not to let anyone else into the RoR. But if she croaks on

can bring astounding developments. I would be disappointed if one of the

Have a good Sunday.

I have a friend who's on myspace, match, and harmony. She's met some
very interesting people (good interesting, not bad interesting). I keep
telling her to find a newsgroup that interests her and maybe she'll
find someone. As Chris said, you never know what astounding
developments could result from innocent postings.
